Biffaward

Biffaward is a multi-million pound fund which awards grants to community and environmental projects across the UK. The fund's money comes from landfill tax credits donated by Biffa Waste Services. Biffaward is managed by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts (RSWT) on Biffa's behalf.

Landfill Tax and the Landfill Communities Fund

Any rubbish that is thrown away and cannot be recycled ends up in a landfill site. Operators of landfill sites pay tax on each tonne of landfill. The purpose of this tax is to make it more expensive to put waste into landfill, encouraging us to reduce our waste and recycle more.

A small proportion of this tax can be used to support a wide range of environmental projects near landfill sites, through the Landfill Communities Fund (LCF). Biffaward is part of the LCF. The LCF is regulated by ENTRUST.
The LCF was formerly known as the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme.

ENTRUST

On behalf of HM Revenue and Customs, ENTRUST acts to regulate all activity that takes place under the Landfill Communities Fund.  All recipients of funding from Biffaward must be enrolled with ENTRUST as an Environmental Body (except for the Small Grants Scheme, where RSWT acts as the EB).

ENTRUST's main responsibilities are to enrol Environmental Bodies, audit and inspect their activities to ensure compliance with the requirements of the Landfill Tax Regulations 1996. From 01May 2009 the ENTRUST levy will decrease to 2.27%.

ENTRUST have developed a new database called ENTRUST Online (EOL). It is an online database that enables Environmental Bodies to access, update and file all your regulatory obligations and submissions. To find out more information on EOL, please follow this link www.entrust.org.uk/home/about/entrust-online
