Restoration of Flitwick Wood
Highlights
- Organisation: Rural Action East
- Amount: £35,694
- Awarded: 08-12-2005
- Ref No: 2687
Flitwick Wood is a Local Nature Reserve, nine miles away from Biffa's North Hertfordshire landfill site. An award of £35,694 will enable the woodland to be conserved and enhanced for the benefit of wildlife and the local community.
The key aim of the work is to collect seed from Flitwick Wood's existing native trees and shrubs, grow these on and eventually plant them in other parts of the wood where new trees are required. Through a number of special 'seed collection' days, volunteers of all ages have become involved in the Wood's management. Aside from delivering clear benefits to biodiversity, many people will benefit through the life of the project by becoming involved with education, collecting and planting work. In the longer term a valuable habitat will be safeguarded, contributing to the overall biodiversity and recreational opportunities available locally.
The application was submitted and fronted by Rural Action East on behalf of The Community Tree Trust. The required ten per cent third party funding was provided by Bedfordshire County Council and Flitwick Town Council.
