Background:
The wood, situated by Wythenshawe Park in Manchester, has long been recognised as an important site for biodiversity and wildlife. Unfortunately, the woodland has been plagued by mosquitoes, overgrown invasive plants, fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour, which has made it an unattractive and underused community space.

The regeneration project will bring the woodland back into good condition involving a variety of tasks. The local community, particularly young people, will be involved in the delivery of this project, which it is hoped will encourage greater usage and reduce the level of anti-social behaviour on the site.

The project's main elements include:

  • Hedge planting
  • Removal of fly-tipped material
  • Clearance of silt in drainage ditches and pipes
  • Bird box installation
  • Installation of information lecterns
  • Creation of new outdoor seating and sculpture areas using locally sourced timber

Progress:
The project's main elements are steadily being worked towards. Other areas of work undertaken so far include; educational activities with adjacent householders; improvements to paths including the installation of broad walks; improvements to irrigation; thinning of trees; and the removal of invasive plants.
There has been a real increase in the presence of birds and other wildlife. It is becoming a great place for the whole community to enjoy.
