2009 Flagship Scheme now
open The start of a
new month saw the launch of Biffaward’s 2009 Flagship Scheme.
Through the Scheme, Biffaward looks to fund regionally or
nationally significant projects which enhance biodiversity or
cultural facilities. The Scheme awards grants of
£150,000 up
to £500,000. If you would like information on

Money, Money, Money
Since November 2008, Biffaward
has awarded £1,400,000 in funding to 32 projects. Look out for
these recently awarded projects in your local
area:
→Restoration of Chances
Park, Carlisle, £22,000
The project will increase the park’s
biodiversity and attraction through physical improvements and
habitat restoration.
 →Bures Mill Fish Pass, Bures,
£10,000
This will enable the provision of a
spawning route for eels, new additional habitat for the last
colony of water voles on the River Stour.

→York Minster
Revealed, York,
£50,000
Biffaward funding has
contributed towards the restoration and conservation of
the magnificent East Front and Great East Window.

News
 Saltholme Wild Bird Discovery Centre opens its
doors The official opening of the Saltholme Wild Bird
Discovery Centre took place on 06 March. Biffaward awarded
£500,000 towards helping this internationally important nature
reserve become accessible to the wider public. For more

Scottish Beaver Trial
update
Biffaward is
awarding the Scottish Wildlife Trust up to £1,000,000 towards
the Scottish Beaver Trail. This partnership project is a
re-introduction programme of the once native European beaver
into West Scotland. The latest update is that the beavers are
currently in quarantine and are due to be released in
May. For more information on the project please click

Your questions
answered…
Why does
a project have to provide a 10% third party
contributor?
Under the
regulations of the Landfill Communities Fund, only 90% of a
grant can be provided from landfill tax - the remainder must
come from another source.
Applicants need
to indicate on their applications whom the third party
contributor will be. If the application
is successful, the
third party contributor must first pay the 10% to
Biffa Waste Services in order for the full amount of the grant
to be released. Some people prefer to think of it as
leverage - finding a relatively small amount of money in order
to release a much larger sum.
